Wynnum R.S.L Services Memorial Club Pipe Band
Wynnum RSL Services memorial Club Pipe Band was formed in the late seventies by a like minded group of Pipe Band Enthusiasts. With the support of the Club the Band has enjoyed great success over the years both on and off the field and has competed in Grades 3 & 4 with at times with two full bands. The band also had a successful teaching program with most of the players in the band taught from within its own ranks. Quite of lot of these students have progressed on to compete with great success & prominence in both the solo piping/drumming and band circuits. The band has also enjoyed support from & gives to the local community by the way of Parades & Functions such as Anzac Day & Community Fundraising Concerts. For many years the band ran the highly successful Wynnum Highland Gathering which was one of Queensland’s & New South Wales most prominent and well attended competitions. As with all organisations there are ebbs and flows and in late 2008 there was an opportunity again for some like minded pipe band enthusiast to bring the band back to the forefront. With the support of some very experienced players the band has rejoined Australian Pipe Band Association competition ranks in Grade 3 and won the Maclean Highland Gathering at its first outing in Easter 2009. While competing is a main part of pipe bands, the band would like to focus more on community & teaching within the pipe band movement. One of our main objectives is to teach the art of bagpiping to new/unskilled people via an internationally accredited teaching program with a view to provide good quality players to higher grades once they have achieved acceptable playing standards. This along with support of the local community will hope to see the movement held in good stead for the future. The band also hopes to re-raise the highly successful Wynnum Highland Gathering in the near future. Keep an eye on the Bands website to see what events are coming up and what the band is up to. We’d love to see you along.
